Another perfect day

This day started a little different than others. After opening waveriding season it’s time to open fishing season too. Last year we were fishing dorados in the Sea of Cortez. And this time – we woke up before dawn, jumped into Caleb’s van and went to test our luck in the Pacific waters.

Campo Rene fishing camp and a small lagoon is ten kilometers away from Punta Abreojos. Lagoon shores are covered with mangroves and with low tide most of the water goes out to the ocean and lagoon turns into little channels network. We’ve loaded the boat with rising sun and slowly picked the place for the first stop.

On his very first cast Caleb reeled in smallish barracuda and in the meantime water stream was bringing us even closer to some jumping fish. We’ve decided to stay there for longer, pulled the boat out on the sandbank and spread out a little. Marius was upset in the beginning – it was his first proper fishing trip and he didn’t get a single bite. But just within fifteen minutes the table has turned. We were cheering Caleb for his catch of the day – good sized corvina and soon Marius rod bent all the way. After a couple of minutes fight, beautiful 4-5 kg grouper was already on the shore. Beginners luck didn’t leave Marius for the rest of the day. As we changed our location he caught another beautiful and good sized halibut. This fellow was fighting a lot and even attacked Marius feet in the water.

While slowly cruising through the channels we’ve filled the cooler full of the fish, we’ve seen A LOT of fish including some sting and bat rays, dolphins and even sharks. Seven hours passed within a blink of the eye. It was time to go back to Abreojos. We’ve filleted the fish, picked the best files for the dinner and shared our fishing story with the friends camping on the point. Fishing trip was 100% success and our dinner was just fantastic!

Oh, I’ve almost forgot: after we finished cleaning the fish, we had a great sailing session. We had some beautiful head to logo high waves and steady wind for 4.7. Just a perfect day.
